LING., PALÉOGR. Transcription signe par signe d'un système d'écriture en un autre système. Le français est une langue sacrée, me dit-il un soir, parce qu'il résulte de l'addition du grec et du latin, qui étaient avec la langue hébraïque les langues utilisées pour l'inscription I.N.R.I. sur la croix de Jésus-Christ. C'est pour cela que la translittération numérale du français, selon la cabbale hébraïque, a un sens profond (ABELLIO, Pacifiques, 1946, p. 120). Le problème de la translittération, un des plus curieux phénomènes qui intéressent la paléographie et l'histoire des textes (L'Hist. et ses méth., 1961, p. 545).
REM. Translit(t)érer, (Translitérer, Translittérer)verbe trans. Faire correspondre à un signe d'un système d'écriture un signe d'un autre système; transcrire par translittération. Le texte à « translittérer » en capitales sur la pierre y avait été rédigé sur tablette ou sur papyrus d'une manière expéditive dans une écriture qui était de l'usage courant (L'Hist. et ses méth., 1961, p. 569).
